Tales of Phantasia Love.

I've been playing Tales of Phantasia a lot more than necessary lately. I can't put my finger on exactly why I like that game so much but I don't think I've enjoyed a game so much since Valkyrie Profile. Maybe it's because it was developed by tri-Ace? Am I ready to declare myself a slave to tri-Ace? Not that I haven't been religiously hunting down all their games for as long as I've owned a PSX. ^o^

And you know you really like a game when you want to play it till the cows come home and you're not even favoring one character over the others. You just want to embrace the entire cast as a whole and like them all the same.

Yeah! ::hides pens and stacks of half-finished love letters to Klarth:: You bet! ::turns off tape recorder and puts away guitar::

Now I have to fight and earn lots of money to buy cooking ingredients so I can have Klarth make sandwiches and hear his pretty voice over and over again. ^o ^... ^ o^

But gawd, Arche is annoying. Maybe her upbeat personality will grow on me but her voice is so irritating! She sounds like a toddler. To think that she's the most popular character in TOP! I don't understand it. I actually don't hate Mint. Maybe she'll do something to tick me off later but at least her instinct is to comfort Cless rather than flap her arms around and demand protection a la Sophia in SO3 or some equally wretched heroine.

Well, if what I interpret from Star Ocean: Eternal Materials is correct, the game staff had no great love of Sophia. They certainly didn't use very fond terms when talking about that scene at the very beginning of the game... Never mind they actually go out and say that Fate doesn't like her, or at least isn't interested in her.

But Fate's a whiny little prick, anyway. I enjoyed smashing him into walls and getting him run over by boulders.

I think Klarth is one of the few male characters in the Tales series who actually has a pleasant sounding voice. I really didn't dig that Stahn sounded like a were-chicken. And don't even get me started on Lloyd, or Kratos, or Tytree...blah blah blah...

And Veigue sounded like he was suffering from sleep deprivation. All Hiyama-voiced characters sound severely congested, anyway...

It's nice that the game staff disliked Sophia as much as I did but is it really okay to make a character like that? It's confusing to the player. ^o^

Yeah, I remember that when I played Narikiri Dungeon 3 (and this was before I picked up TOP, as you know) I pegged Klarth for being my pet character in TOP because he sounded cute. Not a lot of Tales guys have pleasant-sounding voices. Hell, I'll admit that Leon/Judas' voice can be pretty abrasive, but in an amusing way. And then you have Stahn (sounds like a freak in his battle quotes), Cless (not that annoying but not the greatest actor), Woodrow (I like his seiyuu in other roles but for some reason he didn't sound good), Keel (well, he sounds just like Fate so he's annoying but funny), Lloyd (voice cracks freakishly when he's agitated), Kratos (has a horrendously inappropriate voice, like a 50-year-old chain-smoker), Loni (is as annoying as Bleed Kaga and Duo Maxwell), Tytree (I hate Kappei Yamaguchi's voice) and Eugene (he's fine until he has to be emotional and then he totally can't act). I know, it's no worse than the average anime TV series. But dammit, Klarth's voice is sweet and Klarth is sweet. I want to buy all these Urusei Yatsura DVDs with Tsubame in them now. ^o^
