Two Day Wrap Up.
Dec. 16th, 2009 10:54 pmI haven't posted in two days. I finished my holiday knitting last night. Just wait until I have to start baking...
Yesterday morning my poor BooBoo witnessed a kitty gang fight right outside our window. I was sitting in my living room having my cup of morning tea when the garbage men pulled up to the driveway to collect our trash. I instinctively backed away from the picture window in case any of them had a problem with what we threw in the trash (does that usually happen?). Surely enough, someone started ranting as soon as they started tossing around the cans. I had left a side window open for Lucas to look out of. As I passed by it, I noticed that the yelling was actually coming from the concrete walkway below.
It was no human cursing. A small tabby cat was pacing around outside in Garbage Can Alley, yowling at the top of its lungs. Of course, I was taken aback. "That's not my baby he's yelling at!" I insisted. Then, like a flash of furry lightning, another tabby shot out from under the deck. The two cats proceeded to beat the crap out of each other, biting and bunnykicking before the horrified eyes of my gigantic 14lb cat. All the while I was banging on the window trying to break it up. The fight thankfully didn't last very long, and neither cat appeared to be hurt. Lucas hid under the dining room table for a half an hour, though. I had to hum weird songs to him to make him come out. XD
I think both those cats were owned by the same person. Why do they gotta come to my yard to fight? I think underneath my deck is considered sweet real estate for outdoor cats. Either that or they were fighting for the hand of my neutered male cat. :O
That night, there was another cat wandering around outside our house. A little, gray, long-haired kitty. Lucas was very interested. He kept running from window to window trying to get a look at the kitty as he/she/it passed around the perimeter of the house. I really don't know how he feels about other cats.
I finished re-reading Diana Wynne Jones' The Spellcoats. I'm pleased to report that I still have the highest possible opinion of the book; I think her work can be kind of hit-or-miss but the good ones just get better every time you read them. I don't know if she's written any other books as dark and serious as The Spellcoats. Most of her books are full of wacky magical hijinks, which are fine and all, but I think that she can rely too heavily on gags even at the climax of the story.
On the gaming front, I've been playing the Sega Ages Phantasy Star Collection version of Phantasy Star IV. I played it once when it first came out in the US. This is my first experience playing it in Japanese; thankfully it has huge font and isn't all kana like PS 1-3. I hate all kana games (the text is entirely in hiragana). I find the text so hard to read without kanji--it really ruins some old games for me.
Anyway, PSIV is a good, solid RPG, probably the best available for the Genesis. I'm not a huge fan of the series; I'm one of those oddballs that actually thinks that PS2 was the worst one. I think PSIV is about on par with Breath of Fire 2 for the Super Nintendo in terms of quality. The character designs and setting are cool, the music and sound effects are awful. It may be crude of me to say so, but whenever an enemy attacks one of your party members it sounds like they're either puking or farting on them. God. With the exception on the original Sonic the Hedgehog, Genesis games sound baaaaad.
I have more to say but this entry is getting too long. I guess I'll come back later.

Date: 2009-12-18 01:56 am (UTC)That's true about Lucas...I think that he should remember what it's like to play with other cats from the time he spent at his breeder's (supposedly he should still remember) but I think he considers all the humans in my house to be really big cats. I wonder if he's curious about anyone or anything that could be a potential playmate.
