This morning, I spied a pair of mourning doves perched on my deck railing and preening each other in the rain. I thought, "Boy, that would make a great picture!" Unfortunately, they aren't as dumb as they look. They took off as soon as I closed in on them, but I did manage to snap a picture of them in their retreat. The bird on the right is just a gray blur...

Mourning doves are commonplace around here. I know they're just pigeons! I've always loved them for their big black eyes and soothing call. With their tiny heads and large bodies, they remind me of my cat...
