Gallica Rose "Charles de Mills."

It's Gallica Rose "Charles de Mills!" I heard it spreads like crazy via suckers, and am eagerly awaiting the day it devours our back yard!

Gallica Rose "Allegra."

It looks like Allegra has finally come into her own! Too bad her flowers are so heavy that I have to hold them up to take a picture!

Just tasted them, actually. Hey, people use them for culinary purposes all the time! If you want to make rose petal jam, you need to find out which rose tastes the best, right?

Riiiigggghhhhttt...

So of the roses I sampled, the pale purple rugosa Snow Pavement has a lovely herbal flavor. Blanchefleur is okay. The rest are not ok. Quietness is especially nasty and tastes poisonous!

I'm not really into eating flowers, but I never would have thought that Snow Pavement would taste so good! I'm sold!

I have mad love for this rose, but I can't seem to take a picture of it that doesn't look like roadkill. It is far more beautiful in person!

Centifolia Rose "Blanchefleur."

I admit that the flowers aren't as elegant as those of Madame Hardy, but unlike Madame Hardy, this rose is not a one cane wonder after six years. Ha!

Quietness.

It's Griffith Buck Rose "Quietness!" This rose is worth its weight in gold in my garden. All my other modern roses are disease bags, sniff.....

Big Marianne.

This is a crappy picture, but I took it with love.
leene_chan: (Default)

At least in my Zone 6b CT garden. It's Constance Spry!
leene_chan: (Default)
Mariannes!

Marianne is ten feet tall and producing tons of flowers just like these! In contrast, Evelyn is one foot tall and covered with blackspot. Guess who wins Apricot Rose Battle? Who cares if she only blooms for six weeks out of the year?
leene_chan: (Default)
If only I knew how to imbed images in this blog! Marianne #2 is spectacular in her 4th year, 10'x12' and covered with enormous apricot blend flowers. After she's done blooming we are going to have to prune her, because she's blocking a walkway. But really, she is magnificent--the largest rose we have by far. Constance Spry comes in second place. And we've only had that one for 3 years!

I have three big vases filled with Mariannes right now. I could cut more, but I want to leave some flowers for the bees.

It's been three months since Dad finished radiation for prostate cancer, and we have been in utter terror waiting for the results of his first post-treatment PSA test. Even though his surgery in 2015 had been deemed a success, his PSA after surgery was actually higher than the pre-op value, and after various scans and tests we had no clear evidence of cancer and no explanation. Even though the radiation oncologist initially believed that the high PSA meant the cancer probably had spread to the nodes and could only be treated with hormone therapy, the ct scan showed only a small asymmetry in the left side of the prostate bed. Suggesting that if there were anything there it could be treated and possibly cured with radiation.

So here we are, three months after radiation, and Dad's PSA is now technically undetectable. Maybe we will never know what happened for sure, but I seriously suspect surgical error. Something had to have been left behind and now it's gone. Dad's Gleason Score was 7, so I really doubt the cancer could grow back like that in 3 months after surgery. Screw the DaVinci robot! They probably left in the whole damn tumor!

Just thinking about the shit that would hit the fan if Dad's PSA never went down...I just want to eat and sleep for awhile. This has been hell. We needed this news so badly. Maybe Dad can finally put this behind him.

Well, I guess it had to happen eventually.

So many ants around the house lately! We can't use traps with Booboo around, so we have no choice but to off them by hand. Yuck!

I'm pretty far into Julius' route in WOFr. And man...I am glad I did not pick him as a starter character, because he is as boring as fuck and I would have walked away with a bad impression of this game. I had thought that Noel's route had seemed a bit shallow compared to the others, but he was at least borderline likeable in spite of his histrionics. Julius is like a bad date you just wish would end. He's just not a well-written character at all, and Sakurai's monotonous voice doesn't do him any favors. Bleh! Even though I ended up finding Est the most interesting, I thought that Lagi had the sweetest romance. I'm not even really impressed with that stuff, but I thought he was super cute. But screw Julius. I hope I can end this quickly and unlock the harem route.

And I think we're supposed to get a big ol' rainstorm this weekend. The sun was nice while it lasted!

So much crap going on in this country lately. I don't know whether to laugh or cry...

Finished my trip down memory lane with Final Fantasy Mystic Quest last night, and lemme tell ya...that game is shit. Total garbage. I think that Spencer's Place, with the rushing water and that pretty music was kind of nice, but other than that I got absolutely nothing out of the experience. I compare it to going to a party as an introvert. You tell yourself that you have to be social, and sometimes they can be fun, but in the end it turns out to be a lousy experience and you wish you had just stayed home. But this was just a video game! It was not an obligation! Anyway, the game sucked much more than I remembered. Never play it!

On the WOFr front, I'm putting off doing Julius' Route as long as possible because I'm not into effeminate nerds. I played Better Card to get the new Liar's Cards for all the dateable characters. Est's and Alvaro's clips were hilarious! The others...not so much. Beautiful artwork, though, with the exception of Noel's picture, because he had his freaking eyes closed.

I also got Est's friendship ending, because there was a new CG for his ending that I hadn't been able to find online. The ending was pretty much a cop-out, but the CG was very beautiful. After I'm done with the required stuff to unlock the rest of the fan disk, I might try to get Lagi's friendship ending too. Thank god for the fast forward function!

I'm going to do Amy's Route now. She has the same seiyuu as Neige from Sweet Clown, ha ha ha...

The Wind.

It's finally stopped raining. It would be a beautiful day today if not for the persistent wind. I want to go out and look at my sprouts, but I'm afraid of getting dirt or garden debris blown in my eye. It's happened!

I have a physiological need to eat a lot of yogurt (ha ha ha), and after trying a lot of different brands and only tolerating most of them, I've decided that I only like Fage and Noosa. Chobani is too watery and Oikos hasn't been the same since they got rid of the GMOs. I found Siggi's to be a wee bit sour for my tastes. Ok, that is an understatement. Anyway, Fage has godly fruit topping but is wicked expensive. I've been trying all the Noosa I can find and am now officially a hoarder. My favorite is Salted Caramel! I also really like Apple, Lemon, Peach, Key Lime, Mexican Chocolate, Blackberry Serrano...honestly, the only flavors I tried and did not like were Strawberry Rhubarb and Orange Spice. I was not raised on rhubarb and it squicks me--if only they did plain strawberry! Orange spice was sour like Siggi's, ha ha ha...

Still working on finishing Noel's Route in WoFr. In addition I am writing about 4 sentences a day. My composition book has a split binding and it's still half blank, dammit! My handwriting still sucks. I think I'm wasting my time on that, honestly. I guess it's just a lost art.

The Deluge.

It's been pouring rain all day. Even though I find the convective downpours to be maddening, we have a pond down the street that almost dried up, and now it's filled with water. And it's got ducks! Maybe it's just a small positive thing for man, but it's a big happiness for the ducks, right?

On week 18 of Noel's Route in WoFr. Noel is basically like Papyrus from Undertale in the body of a blond ikemen--fairly cute, but he's almost ruined for me by bad voice acting. Aw heck! Other than the two side characters, the only one left is Julius and I don't find him particularly interesting. Maybe he will surprise me. Who knows?

Still, I am enjoying the game quite a bit. Hooray for ports of old games! New games are crap!

But speaking of old games, I've hooked up my SNES for nostalgia purposes and have made up my mind to replay Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. And you know what? That game is totally unfair! For a supposed beginners' RPG you get multiple status ailments with each random battle, and there's no way to defend yourself other than hold out for special armor at the end of the game!

Yesterday was Booboo's 10th birthday. It's kind of hard to believe that he's been with us for so long, but for humans time really flies by once you reach your mid-20s. I still think he's rather kittenish, but maybe I'm forgetting how bad he was when he was a kitten.

I hope he lives a long, long time. Like, Guinness Book of Records long. Aside from the few crystals in his urinalysis, there isn't anything wrong with him.

After a brief warm spell it's cooled down again. Our flowering cherry tree Shougetsu has never looked better! I've taken some photos, but I'm too lazy to upload them, lol...We got lots of daffodils around. When I was a kid I always preferred tulips because they were more colorful, but daffodils have a prettier shape, and they're vole-resistant (I think!).

In WOF R, I've finished Bilal's Route and have just started Noel's. Bilal was...okay as a character. It's not that I hated him or anything, but in the end he kind of seemed like a perv. I think he's way too old for Lulu at 21--she's 15, and it's not like she's mature for her age!

Whenever I hear Noel speak, I just think of Luke from Tales of the Abyss, ha ha ha...

Considering what has been going on with LJ, I am really glad I transferred my journal. I guess that once my subscription runs out I'll get a paid DW account. I don't really care if I lose the few readers I have by completely turning my back on LJ. Even if my journal wouldn't be affected by their new terms, those terms are worth a boycott.

Making do.

The bad thing about typing in this thing on my iPod is that the text scrolls off the screen and I end up making ridiculous grammatical errors...so please bear with me. I actually have normal intelligence!

Speaking of intelligence, I've decided to devote some time to improving my terrible handwriting. I did all right with penmanship when I was a kid, but somewhere on the journey to adulthood I morphed into someone with barely legible handwriting. I always thought it was because my brain worked too fast for my pen. Honestly, I think that now my hand and wrist muscles are not trained for cursive writing. Did they really stop teaching that in school? I thought it was a rite of passage in third grade to be given an erasable pen and ordered to quit printing until high school?

So here I am, writing cursive letters in the air with my index finger when no one is watching and hoping that someday I will be able to read my own handwriting. It is pretty hard to go back to composition books filled with old writing and find myself unable to judge the quality because I can't read it. For shame!

I never really thought of daffodils as having a fragrance, but on a warm breeze they smell a lot like lilacs, my number one nostalgic scent. I tried to prune the butterfly bushes today, but I think I need a bigger clippers!

I finished both Est's and Alvaro's routes in Wand of Fortune R over the past week. Even though I thought that Lagi's route worked better as a romance, I did feel a lot of impact from Est as a character. Alvaro is a shitlord. I don't know why anyone would like such an irredeemable character, but I guess he is pretty popular? He was an effective antagonist, but I didn't enjoy him much as a comrade. I found his voice and mannerisms monotonous, and I'm just not into man dazzle. I personally think that he deserved to die at the end of his route. Lulu did not really conquer him at the end in my opinion--she was just clinging to a relationship that was built on lies. Then again, some people like Touma from Amnesia...
